An official agreement on holding one of the stages of the Grand Prix Formula 1 race in Baku in 2016, has been signed in the Azerbaijani capital. In the frame of the agreement the specially constructed Baku City Circuit will see Formula 1 cars on the weekend of June 17-19, 2016.
“Baku-2015” mentioned that signing of this agreement managed to present Azerbaijan to world sport community one more time.
Azerbaijan's Minister of Youth and Sport, Mr. Azad Rahimov was very delighted to officially announce that Azerbaijan have signed a contract to bring Formula 1 racing to Baku in 2016. He also mentioned that the location of Azerbaijan at the crossroads of eastern Europe and western Asia is a new frontier for Formula 1 racing. Azerbaijan is a modern European country that has established a reputation as a centre of sporting excellence. The signing of the agreement is a very significant new chapter in our ongoing success.
Minister Mr. Azad Rahimov also said the specially constructed Baku City Circuit will see Formula 1 cars race around the picturesque streets of downtown Baku, incorporating the city’s UNESCO-protected old town – Icheri Sheher - as well as its modern skyline and beautiful Caspian Sea vista in front of a global audience of millions.
Baku's 'Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe will be a spectacular addition to the Formula 1 calendar. The course that Azerbaijan is planning to design will be similar to leading street circuits already on the FIA Formula One World Championship calendar. Located at the crossroads of eastern Europe and western Asia, Azerbaijan's inclusion on the F1 calendar was welcomed by Bernie Ecclestone, the chief executive director of group of company at Formula 1: “This will be a street race, which will pass through interesting and picturesque parts of Baku. The event will meet the current Formula 1 criteria”.
